Costa Rica & Nicaragua
June 2024

By Jodie Wert, Independent Travel Advisor

I spent the most amazing eight days exploring Costa Rica and Nicaragua. I started my adventure with four nights exploring the Guanacaste Coast of Costa Rica. The Pacific Coast of Costa Rica is home to some of the best surfing beaches in the country and some amazing resorts! I enjoyed visits to the El Mangroove Hotel and the Hotel Punta Islita (both part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection), Lagarta Lodge, and the Andaz Costa Rica Resort at Peninsula Papagayo. All of these hotels are lovely resorts with access to beautiful beaches, fantastic dining, spa and wellness, and so many activities!

Highlights of my time in the Guanacaste Region:

  • Adventure – My time in Costa Rica was filled with adventure! I enjoyed a fun morning slipping and sliding through the jungle on an ATV. This was such a fun way to see and explore nature, and the howler monkeys put on quite a show along the way!
  • Fun and sun – A private catamaran is a must when visiting Costa Rica. We departed from Playa Flamingo and enjoyed a perfect afternoon of sailing, snorkeling, paddle boarding, and relaxing! On our way back to the pier we were lucky enough to see pilot whales!
  • Food – Costa Rica has amazing food! I enjoyed fruit, fresh fish and seafood, and so many delicious desserts. I will be dreaming about the food for a long time!
  • Mixology – I enjoyed a private mixology class at Punta Islita and learned to make a delicious Coconut Lemonade – definitely a new favorite!
  • Lagarta Lodge – This boutique eco-lodge located in Nosara was such a special place. Perched above the Pacific Ocean and on a nature reserve, this property was truly unforgettable! I was able to hike the miles of trails in the Nature Reserve, followed by time in one of the many infinity pools with breathtaking views of the jungle, river, and ocean. Lagarta was such a surprise and definitely felt authentically Costa Rican!

My final leg of the journey took me to Nicaragua. This was a new country for me, and I was so excited to learn more about this destination and get a new passport stamp! From the moment I arrived, I knew this was a special place. The beauty of the coast is hard to capture, and the people were so warm and welcoming.

Highlights of Nicaragua:

  • Granada – The colonial city of Granada was an easy stop on the way to the coast. The city’s Spanish architecture is stunning!
  • Chocolate – I enjoyed a private chocolate tasting class at the Argencove Chocolate Factory! Can you ever eat too much chocolate?
  • Beaches – It is impossible to capture the beauty of the beaches! Beautiful white sand, clear blue water, and stunning cliffs make the Nicaragua coast so special! Nicaragua’s Pacific coast is a surfer’s paradise!
  • Pack for a Purpose – Our group was able to visit two of the amazing local nonprofits that are making a difference in the country. The group of friends I was traveling with partnered with Pack for a Purpose and brought supplies for these two great organizations. Seeing the positive impact travel can make is always a highlight!
  • Rancho Santana – When I arrived at Rancho Santana, I knew this resort was going to be special. Located on 2,700 acres, the “Ranch” is home to some of the best surfing beaches as well as miles of hiking and biking trails. The onsite farm produces 95% of the farm-to-table food served in the restaurants! There are so many activities to keep busy – horseback riding, tennis, pickle ball, surf lessons, and spa and wellness activities and services. Taking a Pilates class from the treetop open-air classroom is a moment I will always remember! Rancho Santana offers a great variety of accommodations from rooms at the inn, to condo-style accommodations and garden casitas, to the incredible ocean view homes! Rancho Santana is the perfect spot for a multi-generational family gathering, surf trip, or girls' getaway!
  • Jicaro Island Lodge – The last night of my adventure, we boarded a private boat and made the 10-minute ride across Lake Nicaragua. This private island is home to nine private villas and a full-time staff of 17! The service, the food, and the resort were spectacular! For anyone looking for a truly unique and unforgettable experience, Jicaro Island Lodge is definitely worth a visit!
